The Answer of the Comr for
Hackney Coaches & Chairs to
order of the Justices of the
peace for the County of Middx
made the first day of July
1725}

The Commissioners for Licensing and Regulating Hackney
Coaches and Chairs , Having this day taken into Consideration (the
Order of the Justices of the peace for the County of Middx made at
their Quarter Sessions held at Hicks Hall the fifth day of July instant,
Whereby it is Ordered that the said Commissioners be Desired at their
own Costs and Charges to Transmitt to the Clerk of the peace of the said
County, or his Deputy before the 25th. of August next, True Copys of
all their By Laws, And of all Admeasurements which have been
taken by their Direction within the Weekly Bills of Mortality) are
unanimously of Opinion, That Answer be given thereto as follows
(Vizt.) That the said Commissioners have no other By Laws but what
they sent about fifty printed Copys of not long ago to the then Deputy
Clerk of the peace of the County aforesaid at the Desire of the then
Justices of the peace , And whereof they likewise herewith send a Copy,
And they also herewith send a printed Copy of the Rates for Hackney
Coaches and Chairs , as the same were Admeasured and published
by former Commissioners in pursuance of the Act of Parliament
for Licensing and Regulating Hackney Coaches and Chairs Etc And
the present Commissioners beg leave to inform [..] the Justices,
That in Execution of their office, And for the better Determination of
Disputes concerning the Fares of Coachmen, that have been the
Subject of Complaints before them, They have directed, and are frequently
still directing many particular Distances to be Admeasured the
Knowledge of which is of no great general Service, Cases exactly the same
seldom happening twice Those Admeasurements however They have
caused to be entred in a Book for that purpose which are now grown to
be 226 pages in folio of large paper, But they Humbly Conceive,
That they cannot be justifyed in making such a Charge to the
Government as a Copy of all these admeasurements wou'd Amount
to, without the Direction of the Lords Commissioners of his Majesty< no role > 's
Treasury , But the said Justices may have the said Admeasurements
Copied at their own Expence if they think fit.
