Janry Sess: 1717

To the Right Honoble. William Lord< no role >
Cowper Baron of Wingham Lord High
Chancellor of Great Britain

Representacon to
Sd. Chancellor.
touching the incerting
some Justices of peace
of Middx into the
Comicon of Goal
Delivery of Newgate,

We his Matys Justices of the peace of the County of
Middx in Quarter Sessions assembled haveing reced
informacon that some applicacon hath been made to
your Lordship to prevent the passing of a Comission
of Goal Delivery of Newgate in which (we had
reason to beleive) It was intended that some of us
should be incerted Doe beg leave in the most humble
manner to lay before your Lordship the following
Consideracons

That the Comission of Goal Delivery of Newgate is
holden at the Old Bayly as well for the County of Middx
as for the City of London and that since the late great
increase of Inhabitants and buildings in the Suburbs
there have been a greater number of Malefactors
tried for offences comitted in the County of Middx then in the
City of London

That the Clerk of the peace of the sd. County or his Deputy &
the Under Sherriffe & his Officers doe always attend at the
Sessions of Goal Delivery and have places assigned them
for that purpose

That the Justices of the peace of the said County are obliged
to attend the session wth. severall examinacons and
consessions by them taken and have constantly had the
East side of the sd. Court reserved for them But of late
that place hath been let out to hire or otherwise disposed
of by the Officer of the Court, and the Justices thereby and
by other methods of late years used have been made
uneasy & are very much discouraged in the discharge of
that part of their duty which they have been and shall
be always ready & willing to performe

That the Bridges who sitt at the Old Baily frequently deliver
their opinions relateing to us & our proceedings, which would
be of great Use to us to know that wee may regulate
ourselves accordingly And if some of our number were
put into that Comission It would give them an opportunity
of informing & from time to time of the opinions of the
Judges and thereby prevent our transgressing those Rules
