The Examination of John Atherton< no role > of the parish of St. Dunstan in ye:
East in ye. City of London Vintner and Thomas Atkinson< no role > Servt . to the said
John Atherton< no role > taken upon oath before me this 13th. day of May 1715

And first this Examind John Atherton< no role > saith, that on ye. 30th. of April last Four persons
came into this Examts. house, wch. is the Dog Tavern at Billinsgate , between 7 and 8
of the clock in ye. Evering, who were all (except Mr. Lister) unknown to this Examint.
and ye. names of the other three persons, as this Examt. hath been since told, are Edward
Newton
< no role > , Nicholas Packer< no role > , and Wm. Rice, and saith, that after they had drank twelve or
thirteen shillings worth of Wine together, Mr. Lister, and Edward newton< no role > , each drank a
Quart and allmost half a Pint of white and red Port mix'd at a Draught, and that soon
after the said Mr: Lister, and Edward Newton< no role > , being very much indrink, the said Edwd.
Newton, fell from his Chair, and tere his Coate, and the said Wm. Rice helpd the said Edwd.
Newton up and prim'd up the lappet of his Coate, and both the said Mr. Lister and Mr. Newton
slept in their Chairs, and that during ye. tune of their sleeping the said Nicholas Parker< no role > came
out of the said Kitchen to the Barr and left the said Mr. Rice, with ye. sd. Mr. Lister, & Edward
Newton
< no role > and that After ye. sd. Mr. Lister & Edwd. Newton awaked the said Lister declared he knew where he was, and won'd not goe out
of the house that night, and imediately went up stairs, and lay on a bed in this Examints.
house all that night and this Examint. saith, that the said Edward Newton< no role > soon after,
(wch. was neare one of the clock) desired to goe home, And this Examt. with one of this
Examts. boys lighted the said Edward Newton< no role > out of the Back door of the said house,
And this Examt. sent the said Boy to light home ye. said Edward Newton< no role > , and Shut to ye.
Door. and ye. in about three or four minutes the said Edward Newton< no role > came back to the
sd. house, and declared he had lost a Bagg of mony, containing above one hundred pounds
and this Examt. (mistaking the said Edward Newton< no role > for ye. Son of one Newton a
Mathematician who formerly dwelt in ye. house of this Examt. and was reported to be
in indifferent circumstances) told the said Edward Newton< no role > neither he nor his Father
before him were ever worth a hundred pounds, which words this Examt. spoke in ye [..]
Kitchen in the presence of the said Rice and Parker, and both the sd. Wm. Rice & Nicholas Parker< no role >
seemed to agree with this Examt. and said the sd. Edward Newton< no role > was an idle persons &
never had ye. mony. and the said Edward Newton< no role > declared to the said Wm. Rice< no role > & Nicholas
Packer
< no role > , that the brought ye. said Bag of money into ye. Company, and called for a Constable
which this Examt. refused to be sent for, it being sunday morning and this Examint.
apprehending the said Edward Newton< no role > was not worth ye. money he metendedle had lost, And
thereupon this Examt. went to Bed and left the said Edward newton< no role > Wm. Rice and
Nicholas Parker< no role > in ye. said Kitchen. And the Examint. Thomas Atkinson< no role > Saith that
Four persons whose names as he hath been since informed are Lister Nicholas
Parker
< no role > Wm. Rice, and Edward Newton< no role > came into the house of John Atheated< no role > this Examts. Master
John A [..] kenwho keeps ye. Dog Tavern at Billinsgate , on Saturday the 30th.
of April last, about 7 of the clock in the Evening And ye. said persons all drank
very hard till abt. ten of ye. clock, at which time Mr. Lister, and Edwd. Newton
each of them drank at a Draught a Runner full of white and red port mixed,
containing some what above a Quart And that the said Edward Newton< no role > Soon after
fell down from his Chair, and tore his Coate, whereupon ye. sd. Wm. Rice who sat

next to ye. sd. Edwd. Newton [..] help'd him up and pinnd his Coate. And this Examt. saith that the said Mr. Lister soon after, went to bed
in the said house, and left the said Edwd. Newton< no role > Wm. Rice and Nicholas Parker< no role > in the Kitchen where they had sat all ye.
Evening. And saith that in a little time after ye. sd. Mr. Listers going to bed the said Edward Newton< no role > went out of ye. Sd. house
& was lighted by one of ye. Boys belonging to the said house but imediately returned to ye. sd. house & knocked at the Door And
this Examt. opening the said Door ye. sd. Edwd. Newton told this Exat. he had bost a bag of many containing above 100 pounds &
went imediately to ye. sd. Wm. Rice & Nicholas Parker< no role > & told them he had lost ye. mony aforesd. And saith that ye. sd. Wm. Rice pulled
out of his porket a Book pocket book & flung it on ye. Table & said damn if Wele give him his pocket book And the sd. Edward
Newton
< no role > called for a Constable upon which the said Wm. Rice< no role > & Nicholas parker< no role > imediately went out of the said house into a Coach wch.
waited for them at the Door
