me this 9th. Day of February 1782.
Who being on Oath says that on Tuesday Evening last as he was
going a long the Strand
a Man dropped a Purse before him now
Produced, containing a Ring and Bill of Parcels also now produced.
That said Man picked the said Purse up and said this Informant was
entitled to Half the contents and desired this Informant to go with
him to the first Public houseThat they accordingly went to the
Ship and Anchor on Lavey HillThat shortly after they were in,
a Person now present who calls himself Robert Petch< no role >
and another
Man came into the said Alehouse also. That the first Man
pretended "he could not Read" and desired this Informant to read
the Bill of Parcels, which this Informant didThat the third
Man who came in with Petch, desired the first mentioned Man to
go outandborrow £70. and bring it to this Informant (as this
Informants share of the Ring) and to keep the Ring himself
That he accordingly went out, and in a Short space of time
returned and said that "His Friend was not at home" but
requested that the said Robert Petch< no role >
would go out and try
hs Friends for the SumThat said Robert Petch< no role >
accordingly
went and shortly after returned saying "His Friend was not
home and therefore could not get the Money"That Petch
then asked this Informant "what Money he had about him"
this Informant replied "very little" Peter asked "how much"
upon which this Informant took out of his Pocket Seven Shillings
and two old pieces of Silver CoinPitch then asked this Informant
"if he would advance that Money and his Watch and take the
Ring" this Informant replied "Yes"Pitch hen asked this Informant
