Mr. Lock's Gift
The minutes of the Prison Committee of the following days were read and
confirmed whereby it appeared.
Thursday 21st. January.
That the Committee had Resolved that Mr John Woodhouse< no role >
who
officiated as Clerk
should immediately commence and prosecutor the
Action Ordered by the General Court against Samuel S. Snuggs< no role >
the
Contractor
for making the alterations at the Mens Prison and
his Sureties
And had Resolved that ir be recommended to the General Court
that a representation be made to the Court of Aldermen for their
consideration whether it would not be proper to prosecute as an example
to others one or more notorious offenders who had been repeately
committed to this Hospital as Vagrants and were liable on Conviction
to be transported for Seven Years
That notwithstanding the representation of the Committee on the
14th of January 1795 and the Resolution of the Court thereon upon the
29th of that month that numbers of Sick and Lame persons utterly
incapable of Labour continued to be sent to this Hospital. The Committee
had therefore Resolved that the Court be earnestly requested to take
some effectual means to remedy this evil.
And had Resolved that the Treasurer be requested to Summer
a Special Committee to receive and consider the Surveyors Plans
for Building a Prison for the Men
Thursday 28th January
That the Committee Resolved that the Court be requested to
empower them to contract for and carry into effect the plans of the
Surveyor for Building a Prison for the Men which had been
approved of by the Committee
And had Resolved that it be recommended to the Court that two
Guineas be paid to Wm Wade< no role >
a Bricklayer
who was hurt by the accident at the Mens Prison.
