Continued Thursday 20th. June 1765

and Employ such of the Patients at their Needle as are Capable when not
otherwise Busied rather than Let them Walk Idle up and down the House
Shaving it to Strangers and begging Money

That she shall bring into the Committee Room such Patients of the Women
as are Discharged Well

That she shall take Care that the Shaw on which the Patients are laid is
Charged when Damp or Dirty

As to the Office of Basket Men

And the Committee further find that the Duty and Office of the Basket
Men has been and is as follows

Two are to cut the Bread Butter and Cheese by Turns the other to take
Care of the Beer

All to Distribute the Provisions and Beer to the Patients
To Clean the Cells, Galleries, Chequer and Stairs on the Mens end
To Shift the Men Patients once a Week
To Attend on the Committees

To go on Messages and with Letters as Ordered by the Committee treasurer Clerk
or Steward

To Attend and Assist the Men Patients at Bathing Bleeding Shaving and
taking their Medicines

To take Care of the Keys of the Gates after Ringing the Bell by Turns
and on every Sunday and after Ten in the Summer and Nine in the Winter
every Night to Deliver the Keys to the Porter

And We are of Opinion that the following regulations and alterations
should be made in the Office of Basket Men, that is to say

The Basket Men on the Mens side

The Offices and Duty of the
Basketmen on the Mens side
in Bethlem Hospital


That they shall rise at Six in the Summer time and at Seven in the
Winter to Light the Fires in the Store Room Surgery and Infirmary Carry Down their
Patients as soon as Possible and then Set about Cleaning their Gallories and shall
take away such provisions as may be found every Morning

That they shall receive the Linen and other Necessaries brought in wit the Patient
by their Friends and shall keep an Account in Writing that they may be
Delivered up when the Patient is Discharged or if Torn that the Pieces may be
returned to shew that they have not been Purloined

That they shall suffer no Strong Beer or other Liquors to be brought
in for the Patients on any Account but thro' the Stewards Apartment

That they shall Conform to every good Rule made long ago but now
much neglected, not to suffer Prentice Boys, Idle Girls and Jews on a Saturday
to Stay long in the House and loiter away their Time and shall turn them out
if they behave Improperly

It is the Opinion of this Committee that another Basker Man be Added and
that his Duty be as follows

The Assistant Basket Man

The office and Duty of the
Assistant Basket man in
Bethlem Hospital


That he shall cut out the Meat Bread Butter and Cheese under the
Direction of the Steward

That he shall take in the Beer Draw and Deliver it out and keep the
Cellar Sweet and Clean

That he shall take in and Deliver out the Coals sift the Cinders and
take Care there is no Waste

And for his better Encouragement he may Succeed the Junior Basket man
on any Death or Vacancy It the Court shall think proper and that it be
referred to the Weekly Committee to Allot him a proper Apartment
