Continued Wednesday 13th. February 1765
Also to make such Officers or governors in the said Houses to on
the same Poor well Ordered and Kept & for the Governance of the
same Officers as to them should be thought Convenient and not
repugnant to the Law or the Kings Prerogative And that it shod
be lawful as well for them as for such Officers and governors of
of Bridewell as they should Appoint from time to time within
the City of London and County of Middlesex to search & Examine
all Suspicious Houses as Taverns Alehouses Victualling Houses
Gaming and Dicing Houses Dancing Schools, Tennis Plays, Bowling
Alleys Cock Pits and other Suspected or Unlawful Places and also
to search every such Suspicious House or Place of Idle Ruffians
Vagabonds or Masterless Men or Women or any other Suspected
Person or Persons which they could Apprehend and not only to Commit
them but also the Householder - Master or Keeper of such Houses or
Places where they should be found unto the House of Occupations aforesd
or otherwise to Punish them at their Discretions unless they could
Honestly discharge themselves for Harbouring and Lodging such
Suspected Persons or for Maintaining such unlawful Games or that
such Ruffian Vagabond or Masterless Person could Tuestby Excuse
themselves of their Misbehaviour and that it should be lawful
for the said Mayor and Officers for the Time being to Use such
Correction and Order therein as to them should seem Meet

And We further find that his said late Majesty King Edwd
the Sixth by his Letters Patent bearing Date at Westminster the
26th. of the same June Reciting to the Effect in the said grant or
Indenture of Covenants Recited Did Gue and Grant to the said Mayor
Commonalty & Citizens the said Manors Houses or Hospitals called
Bridewell and the Savoy with all the Lands Tenements Hereditaments
and Appartenances therein particularly mentioned situate in the
City of London and in the Counties of Middlesex Kent Essex Hertford
Bucks Cambridge Derby and York and also the said Implements
and Furniture ( Except as in the said Grant is Excepted ) which
were then of the Yearly Value of £450 To hold to the said Mayor
Commonalty and Citizens and their Successors for Ever as of the
Manor of Greenwich in free Soccage by Fealty only and not in Capite
with the like Power for purchasing Lands and Hereditaments to the same
Extent and Yearly Value as in the said Grant mentioned and also
ordained that the Hospitals when founded & Established should be
called the Hospitals
of Edward the Sixth King of England that is to say Christ
Bridewell and St. Thomas the Apostle and should be one Body
Corporate and Politick for Ever by that Name and should have
Perpetual Succession and hare one Common Seal for the Managemt.
of their Affairs with the like Power for making Rules & Ordinances for
appointing Officers & governors & Examining Suspicious Houses for
Vagabonds and Beggars and for punishing them & the Landlords of
such Houses as in the said Grant & Indenture of Covenant is containd.
