agreement for a Corner peice of Ground in old Bethlem
(part of the
possessions of the hospital of Bethlem
) late in the tenure of James Fonlis< no role >
assignee of Wright containing on the East side towards Bishops gate street
about 27 foot and on ye south side about 21. foot and on ye West side
about 22 foot and on ye North side towards the passage of old
Bethlem
about 12 & ½ foot as near as ye same can be computed now
the old materials and rubbish are lyeing upon it The forme of which
price of Ground is Virgalar and described in a Mapp or Ground plott
thereof hereto annexedand to take a Lease thereof for 51 years to
Comence from Xmas next at a pepper Corne Rent for ye first year
and four pounds P Annum for ye reside of ye Terme payable
quarterly with such Covenants at are usually contained me ye Leases from ye
Governors of the said hospital of Bethlem
to their Tenants and a
Covenant to build a new Brick Messuage thereon within a year
according to ye second rate of Building to contain a shop and three
Storys over it and he to have ye materials that are now upon the said
GroundThe Comee are of Opinion to Grant him a [..] Lease
accordingly upon which he gave five shillings to the poor BoxThis
Court having duly weighed and considered ye same doth Confirm ye sd
agreement But in regard it was at first doubtfull to the Court whether
Such a disposition of this peice of Ground might not be presudicial toye
ye neighbouring Tenants as well of ye City as of these hospitals which ye Court
took time to consider & Mr Benbridge being present in Court & desiring that
his Terme may Comence from Midsumr. next instead of Chrismas last ye
Court held it reasonable And it is Ordered that a Lease be made to
him accordingly to comee from 24th. day of June next
