Southwarke was Appointed by Doctor Bramston Surrogate to the Chanceller
of the said Bishopp to be held in the Church of St: Thomas on Thursday
the Seaven and Twentieth day of May One Thousand Seaven Hundred and
Three Of which wee haveing Notice from Mr. Trear and being Informed
that the holding a Visitacon in this Church was altogether Unprsidented
And Apprehending that to permitt the same to be there held might be
Prjudiciall to the Rights of the Hospll: and of the Church which wee Conceived
to be Exempted from such Visitacon Wee referred it to Mr: Trear forthwith
to Advise with Councill and to doe what should be necessary for Prsenting
the Right of the Hospll: and Church in this Case Whereupon Mr: Trear
Consulted with Sr: Edward Northey< no role > Knight her Majesties Attorney Genll :
and with Doctor Oldys and Doctor Lane who were all of Opinion that
by Vertue of the Grant of King Edward the Sixth of the Twelfth day
of August in the Fifth yeare of his Reigne The said Church is totally
Exempt from all Archiepiscopall Episcopall and Archdiaconall Visitacon
whatsoever And the said Doctors Declared that although this Church
be made parochiall by that Grant yet it is Endowed with all the
Priviledges of a Free Chappele And that the Governrs. might well Justify
the Shutting the Church Doores against this Visitacon with which Opinion
Dr: Bramston was made Acquainted and a Meeting was had on Wensday
the Six and Twentieth day of the said Month of May between him &
Dr: Oldys and Mr: Trear Where after some Debate it was agreed as
and Expedient to prevent the Inconveniency that might Attend the
Shutting up the Church Doores in regard there was not then sufficient
time to Appoint the Visitacon in any Aher Church That the Doores should
be kept Shutt the next [..] till Dr: Bramston Came thither And that a protest
in the Name of the Governrs: should be Delivered or made to him by
the Clerke of this Hospitall at the Doores of the Church (being the Shutt
against his holding the Visitacon there And that thereupon he should
withdraw into the Hospitall And make and Signe a Declaracon for
Prserveing the Right of the said Church to be Exempt from such Visitacon
The Forme of which protest and Declaracon were then Settled by the
Advise of Dr: Oldys And that then the Church Doores should be Opened
and the Doctor be permitted to hold the said Visitacon for this time in
the said Church And it was then further Agreed that the said
protest and Declaracon should be registred amongst the Acts
