Richard Torlesse< no role >

To the Rt. Worppll: the President and Trear and the
rest of the Comittee of Governors of St Thomas Hospitall ,

The humble Peticon of Richd: Torlesse< no role > One of the
Physitians and Thomas Elton< no role > one of the Surgeons
in the said Hospitall.

Sheweth

That dureing the late Warr with France the Governors were pleased
to admitt into this Hospitall very great Numbers of Sick and Wounded Seamen
most of whose Cases were very dangerous and hazardous. Amputations were very
frequent and the Care and Attendance of the Physitian and Surgeons and the
Expence of the Apothecary and Surgeons Medicines dureing great part of that
Warr were increased (as your Petr: conceive they may justly affirme) to one Third
more then the Ordinary Business of the house required they having cured in
that time above Four Thousand Seamen besides great Numbers of Soldiers and
other patient.

That the Comr: for sick and Wounded Seamen takeing Notice hereof gave
Encouragement to yor: Petr: and the other Surgeons and Apothecary to hope that
Gratificacon might be Obtained from the Government for such their Extraordinary
Care and Attendance and Expence of Medicines And thereupon Yor: Petr: and
the other Surgeons and Apothecary about seven or Eight yeares since as well to avoid
being guilty of a Breach of the Orders of this House as to make their request
for a Gratificacon more Effectuall did apply themselves to a grand Comittee for Lease
to Sollicite for such Gratificacon and prayed their Countenance and Assistance
therein Which as Your Petr: apprehended they fully obtained that Comittee being
pleased (as Yor: Peticonr: their Understood it) to desire Sr Bartholomew Gracedien< no role > and Mr Evan
Evans
< no role > (two of their Members) to goe up with them to the Comrs: and to joyne in
requesting the Comr: Favour in their behalfe and although nothing of this direccon
may appear in the Minutes of that Comittee the Notice thereof being Omitted
as your Petrs: believe by reason the said Comittee was just Risen or Riseing at the
time when your Petr. and the others concerned attended them yett your Petr.
humbly hope the truth of this Fact will Evidently appear from the Accompt those
Gentlemen and Mr: William Coatsworth< no role > who alsoe attended that Comittee are able to
give thereof to whose Memories in this point Yor: Petr Referr themselves.

That not only those Gentlemen but also Mr. Smith the late Trear was pleased
soon afterwards to waite on the said Comrs: with yor: Petrs: and the other Surgeons and
Apothecary and to request a Gratificacon for them and as your Petrs: remember
Mr: Trear also prayed some Allowance to the Hospitall towards the Charge of
Rebuilding which the Comrs: said was not in their power to Comply with but as to a
Gratificacon for yor Petrs: and the other Officers they would recommend it to the Treasurer
and use their best Endeavours in due time to Obtaine some thing for them or to that
Effect But at that time it was not thought propper to proceed farther in it.

That yor: Petr: being Eldest Physitian and Eldest Surgeon thought themselves
chiefly concerned to look after this Affaire and depending upon the Comr: promise
called severally time afterwards at their Office to Inquire what was done therein And
