Times a day & the Bills as they are found
are sent to Gaol Deb. by the Sheriff-The Prosecutors
come after one another All the while of the
Sessions some Wilfully defer comg till late others Carelessly
what was the reason of that Order as he
beleives-Unless the Court waits for
Business no Notice is taken of that Order
but when Business is Slack that Order is
enforced-the Grand Jury sit as long as
any felony Bills are brot.-Misdemeanor
Bills brot. late are sometimes rejected delayed by
the Jury-The Grand Jury are not discharged
till they have dispatched the Business
before them except as to trespass Bills coming every Late which are postponed to anor Sess. or else might sit de die in
die in all the Year round.

Mr William Pentlow< no role > Keeper of the New Prison
Clerkenwell has been so 14 Years.-The
prisoners from our Gaol have been removed
to Newgate according to the Order of 1726
6 days before the Sessions.

How

How long does those prisoners continue a
Burthen to Newgate?

6 days before the Session begins-Sessions
generally last 3 or 4 days-those who are
Convicted remain in Newgate till executed or
Transported.

What is the Average of Time during which the
prisoners so removed to Newgate are a Burthen
to Newgate?

I can't say that-The Felons that are
Convicted remain at least 2 Months,-If
discharged not above 10 days.

What is the proportion between those
Convicted & those discharged.

The No. discharged are superior to those
Convicted.

Mr. Jefferson-Have you inspected the Gaol
Delivery Books & made any Calculation of
the proportion of prisoners Convicted & prisoners
discharged?
