February 1798.

to the Committee in a Book to be provided for that purpose
stating who are the Prisoners for whom this Additional
Allowance of food is made and the Reason for allowing it

The Committee saw the necessity of this Order to
prevent abuses from creeping in respecting Indulgences to
Prisoners contrary to the spirit and meaning of the Rules
and Orders for the Management of the Prison.

Mr.. Aris having received five Prisoners from the
Kings Bench whom he has hitherto accomodated with Beds
at 1 Gua". Per Week each desired the Opinion of the Committee
whether they might be continued in that situation Vizt. in the
Rooms over the Committee Room Ordered That they be
permitted to remain in their present Situation as to Lodging
but as to Provision that the Rules and Orders of this
Prison be strictly observed and that no distinction whatever
be made in the Treatment of any Prisoners Confined under
Sentence in this place I remember in a Conversation which
I had with Sr. G. O. Paul on this Subject it was his
Opinion that if at their own Expence the Prisoner chuses
to have better fare as to Cuting he should have no
Objection I remember his Expression "if they can get Turtle
and Venison I shall not object to it but it must be
washed down only with Water this Attention was
evidently directed to the Exclusion of Strong Liquors of
every kind which I hope is effectually guarded against
in this Prison the Committee will not fail to notice it if
thro' the Collusion or Negligence of any of the Officers they
should discover any such Abuse introduced into the Prison
on this Subject the Court will be pleased when I have
ceased to trouble them to deliver their sentiments

Mr.. Webb Reported to the Committee that he had
Received a Letter from Dr.. Powell of Bartletts Buildings
