February 1798.
fined and Imprisoned for the same this is Dated the 22d.
Year of the Reign of Edwd. the 1st. in the Year 1294. I only
relate this Circumstance to show that a Bridge existed at
or near the same spot so many years since-I found
nothing further upon the subject from the last date untill
about the 32d. or 33d. of King Henry the 8th. when an Order
was given by Sr.
Anthy. Brown< no role >
(Master of the Horse
to
the said King Henry) directed to the Kings woodward
stating that the Bridge called Baber Bridge
on
Hounslow Heath
being built of Wood was in a
ruinous state and that it was expected the Kings highness
would pass that way in Hunting and also the Bridge
at Cobbham
was in the same case very much decayed
and must be repaired and that he should cult a sufficient
Quantity of the Kings Timber then growing in Perry
Oaks for the repair of Baber Bridge-In the 2d. Year
of the Reign of James the 1st. the Earl of Northumberland
became Possssed of the Manor or Lordship of Syon
in fee and in or about the Year 1617. the said Earl was
presented for not repairing Brentford Bridge
the
stone Bridge at Twickenham
the long Bridge at
Longford
and a Bridge called Perry field Bridge
near
Perry Oaks
but it was found he had nothing to do with
those Bridges in their repairs consequently was acquitted
I mention this Circumstance to shew that Baber Bridge
was then in good repair or that the Earl of Northumberland
was considered to have nothing to do with its repairs
The Duke of Northumberland's river called
Isleworth Mill River
is a cut from the River Coln made
in the Reign of King Henry the 7th. (and at that Kings
Expence) as well for the conveniency of his Hawking as to
serve the abess of Syon with water for a Corn Mill which
river runs under the Said Bridge it will be a natural
Question to ask hath he nothing to do with that Bridge
