February 1798.

separate the Prisoners of different Descriptions and it
appeared that there are no means of separation but
merely of the sixes he Reported that Jews Papists
and People of all Descriptions come into the Chapel
some with the Hats on supposed to be Jews as that
seems a mark of Reverence in them others smoking
with Pipes in their Months of what Description the
Committee could not Determine but they expressed
their Wish that the Chaplain would endeavour to
restore some Degree of Order and Decency in the Chapel
of that Prison of which as I believe several Magistrates
here present can testify the Chapel of the New House of
Correction exhibits a very striking example there being
no Congregation in the Metropolis in which every thing
is Conducted with greater Decency and Solemnity
than in this Chapel-the Committee were of Opinion
that Mr.. Rogers the Surveyor should be directed to
View the Premises at the New Prison and make his
Report to the next Committee in what way such a
Portion of Ground may be taken in from the Scite
of the Old House of Correction as would Answer the
purpose of effecting a separation of Prisoners committed
for Trial from Persons confined for Re-examination and
also of Prisoners charged with Petty Offences as well
Male as Female.

Mr.. Webb the Surgeon was called in and
Examined concerning his Account of Visits made at
the Prison and it appearing to the Committee that a
greater proportion of Extra Food is sent in for the use
of the Infirmary and Sick Prisoners than is agreeable
to the number of Prisoners Reported to be in the Infirmary
Ordered That in future an exact Account be delivered
