Order for Suppressing
disorders in Moorfields }

Upon reading a petition and remonstrance of the Constable Headboroughs
and several other Inhabitants of the parish of St. Luke in the County of
Middx made unto this Court in order to suppress loose idle and
disorderly persons such as Shewers of interludes, Gamblers, and
Gamesters of all kinds, and all other Vagabonds in Moorfields who in
open defiance of the Laws daily continue (as the said petitioners
complain) to infest the same place to the Ruin of Youth corruption
of good Morals and detriment of Trade which disorders the petitioners
the said Headboroughs alledge they some time since endeavouring
to suppress were grievously assaulted and beaten. This Court upon
Consideration of the premisses Doth for preventing such mischiefs
for the future order that Mr. John Allen< no role > High Constable of Finsbury
Division in the said County do forthwith issue forth his precepts to the
respective Petty Constables and Headboroughs of the respective
parishes and places in his said Division (on which Division the said
place called Moorfields doth lye) requireing them in Case any of the
said Shewers or players of Interludes. plays or drolls or others
shall Act Exhibite or shew any such interludes plays or drolls
within the said Division or play at any unlawfull Game or Games to
apprehend and Carry all persons so offending before one or more
of his Majestys Justices of the peace for the said County to the
end they may be punished according at Law And for that purpose
this Court doth further order that the said High Constable do
require the respective Constables and Headboroughs aforesaid
to repair and go at such time and times as the said High Constable
shall in this behalf appoint to the said place called Moorfields in
order to apprehend such persons as they shall find or see offending
in the premisses aforesaid, And for the more effectual suppressing
the Grievances aforesaid It is hereby recommended unto his
Majestys Justices of the peace for this County residing in Finsbury
Division aforesaid and every of them to meet at a House called or
known by the Name or Sign of the Red Lyon near Moorfields
aforesaid on Monday Tuesday & Wednesday in Whitsun Week next
at ten of the Clock in the forenoon and at such other times as they
shall in this behalf appoint in Order to proceed against such
Offenders as shall be brought before them by the said High
Constable or other peace officers, according to Law, And the said
High Constable & other peace Officers are required to be aiding
and Assisting to the said Justices of the peace and to observe their
Orders and directions for the more Effectual Suppressing and
preventing the abuses aforesaid.
