Blocks & Beatles
for the House of

Upon reading the humble Petition of Peter Creswell< no role >
Master or Keeper of the House of Correction at
Clerkenwell in this County exhibited unto this
Court Setting forth (nit alia) that the Petitioner hath
frequent Complaints from the Masters who supply him
with Hemp by reason that their Hemp is much damaged
and Spoiled in the Beating occasioned by the ruinous
Condition of the Blocks and Beatles belonging to the
said House of Correction Soe that the Petitioner is
afraid he shall not be able to find Work for the
Prisoners committed for labour And the Petitioner
praying that this Court will be pleased to Order
such A Number of Blocks and Beadles at will
be necessary to keep the Prisoners to Work It is
thought fit and Ordered by this Court that It be
and It is hereby recomended and referred unto

this County or any three or more of them to assemble
and meet together and to see what Blocks & Beatles
are now belonging to the said House of Correction
and in what Condition the same are and if any of
them are soe worne and decayed that they are not fit
to be used And if any and what Number of new
Blocks and Beatles ought to be produced for
keeping the Prisoners to Worke and what the
same will cost And to give Order and Direction for
the makeing of Soe many good and sufficient new
Blocks and Beatles for the said House of Correction
as they shall think necessary for keeping the
Prisoners to labour and at as cheap Rates as
the same can be made for And to Report an
Account of their proceedings in the Premisses
