The Information of Johanna Clarke< no role >
taken on Oath before me this 2nd. day
of May 1789.

Who being on Oath says that she is a Servant at the
Treasury that on Tuesday was Le Night< no role > William Jones< no role > took
the Lock of Mr Pitts Door at the top of the Steps leading from the
Treasury to Mr. Pitts House, that said Jonesput the Lockcame
again on Thursday or Friday following about said door. That said
Jones put the Lock on said door on Friday or Saturday last that
from the time of taking said Lock off to this day said Jones hath
been at the Treasury Nine or ten different times mostly in the
Mornings before the Office was open and sometimes in the
middle of the day And that he generally pretended to come about
Mr Pitts Lock< no role > . That this morning about eight oClock said Jones
Came when he said "that he was come to put on an Eschutcheon
to Mr. Pitts Lock". Informant asked him, If he wanted the Keys, and said
Jones replied "no, He could do without the keys". That said Jones then
went up Stairs towards Mr Pitts door and this Informant Staid
about ten minutes in the Parlour when she went to Ask him if
he knew anything of an Iron Bar She had missed; And not finding
him there, She went thro the Lords Room, Mr Rose's Room, and
opened the door of Mr Steele's Room (the Windows of which Rooms
were all Shut) When she called out "Smith" three times, and
upon no Answer being made she went into Mr Steele's Room
the door falling too after her And as she was going towards the
door of Mr Steele's Room, which leads to Mr Cotton's Office, she
turned her head round in Mr Steele's Room and sawsaid
said Jones in the Room Coming from the Window (the Room being
dark from the Window Shutters being Shut) When she observed
to him that she had been all round the House looking for him
when said Jones replied "for me my dear, what do you
