Depositions taken on view of the Body of
Edwin Swain< no role > at the Sign of the Black
Horse in the Parish of Endfield in the
County of Middlesex the 7t- day of May
1789 before Edward Walter< no role > one of his
Majestys Coroners for the said County

Officer of Excize being Sworn [..]
saith That on Tuesday about the hour of Seven
in the [..] Evening Deponent was standing near
the Sign of the Black Horse Endfield Highway
when the Lincoln Stage Coach drove up for
the purpose of Watering the Horses when one
of the outside Passengers which Deponent now
knows to be William ward< no role > called out what
odds meaning as Deponent understood what
where the odds upon the Battle intended to be
fought between Mendoza and Humphreys at
Stilton to which the deced Swain [..]
who was standing near Deponent said he
would take 35/10 Guinea Ward then descended
from the Coach and pulled our a Guinea and
the deced did the like and wished to put it
in the hands of some person as a State holder
but no person would receive some Ward then
asked the deceased if he was a Fighter for
which he Answered he could Fight him
