Middlesex to wit


The Information of John Fields< no role > at the Nell Gwynne
Alehouse at Chelsea late a Serjeant in the 58th..
Regiment of Foot; and William Rode< no role > of Saint
Martin in the Fields Constable taken before me
this 27th.. Day of February 1784

Who on their Oath Say and first the Said John Field< no role > says that
on the 5th.. of February last as this Informant was walking up
James Street< no role > Covent Garden , a Man in Boots entered into Conversation
with this Informant, observing now dirty the Street were-That
as they turned into Long Acre this Informant observed a Purse
lying, which the said Man picked up, and put into his Pocket
That said Man pressed Informant to go into an Alehouse to examine
the Contents of the Purse That they went to an Alehouse near Long
Acre where they examined the Purse and found the Ring & Receipt
now Produced. That a Person now present who calls himself Humphry
Moore
< no role > then came into the Room and asked whether "there was
any thing extraordinary" when said frist Man shewed him the
Ring and Receipt telling said Moore that he had picked it up
That said Moore observed that "Informant was entitled to Half
as being present when it was Picked up" That after a good deal
of Conversation between said Man and Moore, Moore asked whether
''said Man and Informant would given him a Guinea each if he (Moore)
Settled the Matter between them"-which they agreed to. That Said Man
then went out pretending to get Cash for a Bill of £150, but
returned without it. That this Informant proposed Advertising the
Ring, or to have it Valued by a Jeweller, which said Man objected
to. That said Moore asked said other Man whether "He had any Money"
who replied that he had only brought one Guinea into Town. That
Moore asked Informant if "He had any Money", Informant Replied
about a Guinea-Moore asked if "He had any Money at home,"
Informant replied about 30 or £40. Moore then proposed going
