YardStreet in the Hamlet of Ratcliff
Admitted an
Evidence on his Majestys behalf
Taken this First day of October 1781
before me One of his Majesty's Justices
of the Peace in and for the said
County.
Who being upon Oath Saith that between
the hours of Six and Seven O Clock last night Thomas
Evans< no role >
and Richard Mills< no role >
came to him at the Queens
head in Pump Yard in the Hamlet of Ratcliff
aforesaid and Informed him
that there was a Chance of Flax
and Hemp (meaning
an Informant Supposes that there were a Chance
of Stealing a Quantity of the above Articles) and if
he would go andandwait in the Craft they would
go and get it but which Informant at that
time refused to do and would not have any
thing to do with if
That said Evans and Mills and this Informant
Staid at the Queens head for some time and drank
between five and Six Pots of Beer. when Informant
being much Heated in Liquor was persuaded on ley
said Evans and Mills to go with them and they
all three went out together from the Queens head
to the Water Side near Mr. Barkers Wharfatin
Narrow Street Ratcliff
That Mills and Evans took a Stiff and went
from the Shore with Intent as Informant apprehent
to Steal some Flax or Hemp leaving Informant
behind where he Continued some times in the Craft &
some times [..] Mr Barlers Wharf for near two hours
at which time they returned but then had nothing
with them.
