Upon Reading a Report from the Comittee of this House dated
18th. March 1752 under the hands of Robert Alsop< no role > Esq Aldn. Trears

Pursuance of an order of last Court this Comittee have enquired
into the Duty and profits of the Office of Steward of this Hospital & imported
the Account laid before the Court the 6th. of May 1736 by the Officers & Servts.
of both Hospitals what they Apprehend to be their Care Duty and Trust
[..] And do conceive that the Duty of the Steward of Bridewell is

To wait on New Governors with Staves & acquaint them with their Election
To Collect the rents & Annuitys payable to this Hospital
To provide and Deliver out the Diet daily for the prisoners
To receive of the HempDresser what becomes due for the Prisoners Labor
To Direct the Workmen to do such repairs as Ordered by the Comittee
To direct such Repairs as by Accidents or decay may become imediately and
absolutely Necessary to be done and all other of Small Charge and
Expences not Exceeding 40s.

To Examine the Workmens and Tradesmens bills & see that they be right, &
pay them as the Committee directs

To Attend to all Courts and Comittees of this Hospital to be ready to be called
in as Occasion shall happen and to Observe such Directions as he shall
receive from time to time.

And the Comittee are of Opinion to make a Small Alteration of the
Order of the 7th. of May 1647 for the Prisoners Diet had that for the pt. time it shoud
be for each Prisoner for a Day & Night as follows Vizt

on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, & Thursdays.

B Ten Ounces of good beef boyld without boneOne Winchester pint of Pottage
one penny loaf of the best Wheaten breadOne Winchester quart of one small
beer at noon and a print at Night

On Wednesdays, Fridays, & Saturdays
Three Ounces of butter or four Ounces of good Cheshire or Warwattshire Cheese
one Winchester pint of good Milk Pottage, and bread and beer as on other days

And that the Provisions shou'd be weighed and Measured in the presence of
the Porter or his Man to be Distributed among the Prisoners as usualAnd
that the Particulars of the Diet shoud be fierly written & hung up in Each of
the Workshops in this Hospital.

And this Comittee are of Opinion that the Workmens books wch are now
left at the Porters stand for the future be left at the Stewards and that the Workmen
shoud therein Enter every Night all the Work and Materials that day done and
furnished for this HospitalAnd that the Steward do inspect the Workmen
Employed in the Hospital or precinct And take an Accot. of the Number of Men
every day and that he shoud also Weigh & take an Accot. of all Iron, Lead, Stands &c.
that shall be brot. into or taken out of this House for the use of the Hospital

And this Comittee find the yearly profits of the Steward to be as follows Vizt
His Salary £32for Hoses Shoes and Shirts about £2In lieu of pmt. fees £2
and 7 Chaldon of Coles computed at £10.10In all £46..10
besides his Appartment in the Hospital & a little profit he may have by that [..]

And upon the whole M [..] er the Comittee are of opinion That as the Steward is
a place of Trust and a good deal of business the before mentioned Allowances are
not Adequate to the Care and Trouble And that it woud be proper to increase
the Steward Salary if the Court shou'd think fit All wch is Nevertheless Submitted
to the Judgment of the Court. This Court having duly Weighed and Considered
the said Report doth Confirm the same.

And it is Ordered that the Stewards Salary of £32 for the future be
£50 P Ann
