Examination TextThe Examination of Mary Puller singlewoman in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken upon oath this 30th Day of January 1756. This Examinant saith that she is 38 years of age and never was married, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Kemp a Victualler in Bucks Street York Buildings in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields aforesaid for the space of four years at the yearly wages of 3 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same about 14 years ago, that she never kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor hath been a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since, And this Examinant on her oath further saith that she was on the seventh Day of January instant delivered in the workhouse aforesaid of a female bastard child (since christened Sarah) yet living and is become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that James [Baines] a Jeweller lodging at a Watchmaker's in Pall Mall had carnal knowledge of her body the 25th day of March last in Mary le Bone Fields and several times afterwards at different places at which or one of which times he the said James [Baines] did beget on her body the said female bastard child, and that he the said James [Baines] is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before Benjamin Cox.
