Examination TextThe Examination of Mary Baynes lodging at Mrs Knight's in Dirty Lane in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken upon oath this 28th day of August 1764. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 23 years of age, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Stephens a Player in Little Mays Buildings and in Russell Street which is in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields aforesaid for the space of one year at the yearly wages of 4 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same last May, that she hath not done any act again a subsequent settlement, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Elias Hilliard, apprentice to Mr Purser a Painter in Red Lion Court Fleet Street had carnal knowledge of her body the first Day of January last on a bed in a back room up one pair of stairs at the house of Mr Stillwell in Russell Street aforesaid, and several times afterwards at the same place and different places, at which or one of which times he the said Elias Hilliard did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he this said Elias Hilliard is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before Benjamin Cox.
