Examination Text | The Examination of Elizabeth Overton singlewoman lodging at Mr Stodhart's the White Horse in Long Acre within the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken upon oath this 19th July 1764. This Examinant upon her oath saith that she is 19 years of age and never was married, that she has been a yearly hired servant to the above named Mr Stodhart for the space of one year and upwards at the yearly wages of 6 pounds diet and lodging, And this Examinant upon her voluntary oath further saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that John Tovercraft who is a Carpenter by trade and lodges at the said Mr Stodhart's in Long acre had carnal knowledge of her body about the month of January last upon a bed up three pair of stairs at the said house and several times afterwards at the same place at which or one which times he the said John Tovercraft did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said John Tovercraft is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before Benjamin Cox. |
