Examination TextThe Examination of Eleanor Sheppey singlewoman in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields passed from the Parish of St Anne within the liberty of Westminster in the County of Middlesex taken upon oath this 25th day of January 1764. This Examinant upon her oath saith that she is 21 years of age and never was married, that she was a yearly hired servant in the capacity a Cook to Lady Prendergrast in that part of Leicester Fields which is in the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields for the space of 15 months at the yearly wages of 10 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same about 12 months since and hath not done any act to gain a subsequent settlement, And this Examinant upon her voluntary oath further saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Thomas Greenwood who is to be met with at Mr Wetherspoon's a Barber's in Castle Street Oxford Market had carnal knowledge of her body on or about the eighth day of May last upon the floor in the fore parlour of the house of Humphrey Minchin Esq in Margaret Street Cavendish Square and afterwards at the same place at which or one of which times he the said Thomas Greenwood did beget her with child or children of which she is now pregnant, and that he the said Thomas Greenwood is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the Day and year above said before Thomas Balack.
