Examination TextThe Examination of Christian Herring lodging at Mrs Madine's in Red Lyon Court in White Hart Yard by Drury Lane in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this 28th day of May 1774. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 17 years and upwards, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor was a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together, that her father Robert Herring was born in Marygold Court in the Parish aforesaid as she this Examinant hath been informed and verily believes, that he never kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any Parish taxes nor was a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together to this Examinant's knowledge, that her grandfather William Herring was a Taylor by trade and lived in and rented an house in Marygold Court in the Strand in the Parish aforesaid for the space of several years at the yearly rent of 10 pounds besides taxes as she this Examinant hath been informed by her father, that he never kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year nor paid any parish taxes after he quitted the said house to this Examinant's knowledge, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now Great with children on child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Thomas Yates a Victualler at the sign of the Feathers in Wild Street had carnal knowledge of her body about two months before Christmas last in and upon a bed in a back room up one pair of stairs in a house in King Street in Drury Lane and another time in a bed in the Kitchin in Red Lyon Court aforesaid and several times afterwards in several houses about Covent Garden at which or one of which times he the said Thomas Yates did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said Thomas Yates is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before J. Treslove.
