Examination TextThe Examination of Catherine Foley lodging in Charles Court in the Strand in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this second Day of November 1778. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is about 35 years of age, that she never was married (except to Michael Crossby after the manner of the Church of Rome about five years ago), that she was yearly hired servant to Mr Wagstaff a Victualler at the sign of the White Swan in Hungerford Market in the Parish aforesaid for the space of three years and an half all under one hiring at the yearly wages of 5 pounds for the first two years of the said time and 7 pounds years of the remainder of the said time diet and lodging, quitted the said service about eight years ago, that she hath not kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor been a yearly hired servant in the one place for 12 months together since, And this Examinant on her oath further saith that she was on the 11th Day of May last delivered in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields of a Male bastard child (since christened William) yet living and is in the coming chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin the Fields, and that Michael Crossby a soldier and now in Garrison did beget on her body the said Male bastard child and that he the said Michael Crossby is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the second Day of November 1778 before Sampson Wright, and John Goodchild.
