Examination TextThe Examination of Elizabeth Cowbrick in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this 25th day of March in the year 1778. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is about 34 years of age, and is the wife of Llive Cowbrick (in the train of Artillery a Soldier and gone abroad near three years) and that her said husband hath not had access to her this Examinant since the his going abroad, And this Examinant on her oath further saith that she was on the eighth day of February last delivered of a female bastard child in the workhouse aforesaid (since christened Harriet) yet living and is become chargeable to the Parish aforesaid, and that John Bruce a soldier in the third Regiment of Guards did beget on her body the said female bastard child, and that he the said John Bruce is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year first above written before Thomas Bullard, John Goodchild.
