Examination TextThe Examination of Mary Castell lodging with Mr Pottell at Mr Finch's a Waterman at No.23 in Charles Court in the Strand in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this 13th Day of February in the year 1778. This Examinant on her oath saith she is 52 years of age and upwards, that she is the wife of Richard Castell (gone from her six years ago) to whom she was married at the Parish Church of Trinity in the town of Colchester in the County of Essex the 18th Day of August in the year 1763, that her said husband was while single and unmarried a yearly hired servant in the capacity of a Postillion to the late Duke of Marlborough at Marlborough House in the Parish aforesaid for the space of two years all under one hiring but what wage her said husband had in the said service she this Examinant cannot tell, but had diet and lodging in his Grace's Horse aforesaid [sic] but whether he was discharged in the town or in the country she this Examinant cannot tell, that her said husband never kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor was a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since he quitted the said Duke's service to this Examinant's knowledge. Sworn the 13th Day of February 1778 before Thomas Bullard.
