Examination TextThe Examination of Mary Hughs lodging with Mrs Brodie up a passage next a Bird Shop in the Strand in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this 10th day of September 1777. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 19 years of age and upwards, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Osborne Tavern Keeper in the Adelphi buildings in the Parish aforesaid for the space of 14 months all under one hiring at the yearly wages of 6 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same about four months ago, that she hath not kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year nor paid any parish taxes since, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now big with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and become chargeable to the Parish aforesaid, and that Owen Jones late a Waiter at Mr Osborne's who died about seven weeks ago as she this Examinant hath been informed and verily believes to be true did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said Owen Jones was the only father thereof and no man else.
