Examination TextJohn Whitney aged about 33 years Lodging at Mr. Hannington's the Horse & Groom in St. Martin's Lane where he hath Lodged upwards of a Quarter of a Year, Saith he was Married to Mary his wife at Greys Inn Chappel eleven years last July, That he served his Apprenticeship with Mr. Lawrence Butcher in Hungerford Market, to whom he was bound by the Trustees of the Charity Scool of this Parish about ffouteen years agoe, Saith he was never a yearly hired Servant, That he never kept house, But about nine years agoe he hired a shop in St. James's Market and occupied the same about two years paid £5 p. Week Rent therefore but Mr. Heard who was his Landlord paid Taxes for his and his own Shop adjoining to it, Saith about four months of the time he Lodged in Market Lane St. James's and the remainder of the time and after he left the said Shop in Coventry Court in this Parish, That the said Shop was a distinct, [in two] apartment the said Mr. Heard nor no other Person having any Community with the same - Saith he never Rented £10 p. ann. or paid any parochial Taxes since, hath four Children, Ann aged about ten years, Mary eight years and an half Elizabeth 3 years and upwards and Sarah aged Six Months.
