Examination TextThe Examination of Mary Martin lodging at Mr Oliver's a Peruke maker in Charles Street in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this 12th Day of April in the year of our Lord 1776. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 30 years of age and upwards, that she never was married, that she was bound an apprentice by an indenture for seven years to Mr Matthews a Book Binder Thackham's Court in the Parish aforesaid and there served her said Master all the said term, which expired about 10 years ago, that she never kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor been yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since. And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith, that she is now big with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the Parish aforesaid, and that John Mason (who died the ninth day of November last) Cooper did beget her with the child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said John Mason was the true and only father thereof, and no man else.
