| Examination Text | The Examination of Jane Jones in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields passed from the Parish of St. Mary Islington in the County of Middlesex taken upon oath this 26th Day of December in the year of our Lord 1765. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 28 years of age and is the widow of Edward Jones (who died the 15th June 1763) to whom she was married at the Parish Church of St. James in Piccadilly about nine years ago, that her said husband sold milk, and as she this Examinant hath been informed by her said husband that her said husband lived in and rented a house in St Martin's Court in the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields aforesaid for the space of three years at the yearly rent of 17 pounds besides taxes, that her said husband never kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year nor paid any parish taxes after he quitted the said house in St Martin's Court to this Examinant's knowledge, nor hath she this Examinant since the death of her said husband, that she hath one child by her said husband to wit Samuel aged five years and upwards now with this Examinant's Father in Shropshire, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Johan Condrad Sliman [sic], a Gentleman in Wells Row Islington had carnal knowledge of her body the beginning of the month of July last in and upon a bed in a back room up one pair of stairs at the house of the said Mr Stilman's in Wells Row (where she this Examinant was a servant) and several times afterwards in the same place at which or one of which times he the said Johan Condrad Sliman did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said Johan Condrad Sliman is the true and only father thereof and no man else.
