Examination TextThe Examination of Margaret Richardson singlewoman taken upon oath this 23rd Day of November in the year of our Lord 1738. Who upon her oath saith she is about 36 years old, at that she never was married, that on the 31st Day of January last past she was delivered of female bastard child (since christened Mary) at the house of one Mr Griffith, a Plaisterer in Rose Street in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields within the liberty of Westminster in the County of Middlesex which said female bastard child was lately removed from the Parish of St Giles in the Fields to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields as the place at the last legal settlement of the said child and is yet living and become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and further saith that one Robert Leech, a Porter with whom she cohabitated as man and wife for several years had carnal knowledge of her body in a room one pair of stairs backwards in the house of the said Mr Griffith in Rose Street aforesaid and did there beget on her body the said female bastard child, and that he the said Robert Leech is the true and only father thereof and no man else.
