Examination TextThe Examination of Jane Johnson a singlewoman taken upon oath this [blank] Day of [blank] in the year of her Lord 1739. Who upon her oath saith she is 18 years old, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she never kept any house rented 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes or lived the space of a year as a yearly hired servant in any service, that she was born at Putney and that her father John Johnson was a Joiner and was bound an apprentice by indenture for seven years as she hath heard say to Mr Tyler in St Martin's Lane and with him served all his apprenticeship, since the expiration whereof he kept house in Newport Alley for near six years and then and there died, but what rent he paid for the same knows not nor ever heard, and that her mother from thence removed into Castle Street by the Meuse in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields and took house the corner of White Hart Yard there and kept the same eight years during her widowhood and paid 24 pounds by the year rent, and then married her now husband [blank] Bliss, And further upon her voluntary oath saith that she is now Great with child which when born is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable unto the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that one Francis Brown a Lighterman whose brother-in-law keeps the sign of the Py'd Bull in Grays Inn Lane had carnal knowledge of her body in the room up two pair of stairs at a Chandler's shop in Newtoner's Lane in the Parish of St Giles in the Fields about a month before Christmas last where they lay together all night, and likewise since at a Staymaker's in Exeter Exchange Court in the Strand in the lodging room of one Gregory, a Printer there at which or one of which times he begot her with child of the child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said Francis Brown is the true and only father thereof and no man else.
