Examination TextThe Examination of Isabella Bartheston, singlewoman taken upon oath this 31st day of January 1740. Who upon her voluntary oath saith that she is about 20 years old, that she never was married, that on Sunday the 13th of this instant January she was delivered of a female bastard child (since christened Mary) in the workhouse of and in the parish of St. Martin in the Fields in the Liberty of Westminster in the county of Middlesex, yet living and become chargeable to the said parish, and that one John Kennady, now or lately a Footman to Lord Portmore in St. James's Square, had the carnal knowledge of her body sometime in the month of January last in the room one pair of stairs forwards in the house of one Alexander Grant at the sign of the Parliament House in Warwick Street in the parish of St. Martin in the Fields aforesaid (she this examinant being then and there a servant to the aforesaid Alexander Grant) and several times at the same place at which or one of which times he did beget on her body the said female bastard child, and that he the said John Kennady is the true and only father thereof and no man else.
