The Examination of Elizth- Clifton< no role > Widow of Robert Clifton< no role >
Lodging in the Parish of St. Clement Danes in the County of
Middlesex Taken the 23d. Day of January 1740 Who upon
her Oath saith that upwards of six Months ago she lived with
one Mr. Barrett of the Parish of Chelsea in the sd. County
of Middx Wax Chandler for the Space of one Year & upwards
at the Yearly Wages of Five Pounds and hath not since that
time rented Ten Pounds a Year paid Parish Taxes lived with
any other Person as a yearly hired Servant for the Space of one
Year or otherwise gain'd a Settlement in any other Place to
her knowledge or beleife, And further upon her Voluntary
Oath saith that on the 14th- Day of September last She was
delivered of a Female Bastard Child in Hollis Street in the sd.
Parish of St- Clement Danes which hath since been baptized
by the Name of Mary< no role > & that one Elias Williams< no role > Servt . to the
said Mr. Barrett did begett the said Child on her Body
he at such Time living in the same House with this Examinant
& there became accquainted with her & had Carnall Knowledge
of her Body in the Month of January last [..]
& at Several other Times since at one of which Times he got
her with Child of the sd. Female Bastard Child which she
was delivered of as aforesd. and yt. he the sd. Elias Williams< no role > & no other
Persons the true & reall father thereof & she being Poor is not able to maintaine
herselfe & Child
