An Inquisition Indented, taken for our Sovereign Lord the
King at the Parish of Saint Martin in the Fields
within the Liberty of the Dean and Chapter of the Collegiate Church of St. Peter, Westminster ,
in the County of Middlesex , the fourth day of September in the twenty eighth
Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord GEORGE the Third, by the Grace of God, of
Great-Britain, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and so forth, before Thomas

< no role > , and William Thomas< no role > good and lawful Men of the said Liberty, duly
chosen, who being then and there duly sworn and charged to enquire for our said Lord the
King, when, how, and by what Means the said Martha Hay came to
h er Death, do upon their Oath say That the said Martha Hay not being
of sound Mind Memory and Understanding but Lunatick
and distracted on the third day of September in the Year aforesaid
one End of a certain Piece of Cord unto an Iron Screw in the Top of
a Bed post in the Lodging Room or Apartment of her the said
Martha Hay in the Dwelling House of James Adams< no role > situate
and being in Whitcombe Street in the Parish aforesaid within
the Liberty and County aforesaid and the other and thereof about
her own neck did fix tie and fasten and therewith did then and there
hang suffocate and strangle herself of which said hanging
suffocation and strangling she the said Martha Hay then and
there died And so the Jurors aforesaid upon their oath aforesaid
do say that the said Martha Hay in manner and by the means
aforesaid not being of sound mind Memory and understanding
but Lunatick and distracted did kill herself.

In Witness whereof as well the said Coroner ,
as the said John Raines< no role > Foreman of the said Jurors, on the
behalf of himself and the rest of his Fellows in their presence,
have to this Inquisition set their Hands and Seals the
Day year and Place abovementioned.
