Answer to the Sheriffs second Letter

Golden Square
19 Septr. 1781

Sir
I received your second Lre very late last Night in
Solder Square the Letter I had the Honor to send you yesterday
war by the direction of the Justices of the peace then in Sessions
assembled. Our Sessions being now ended, as a single Justice I can
take no Steps contrary to the Resolutions of the Sessions upon the
Matter at that Time. Permit one however to observe that
Thos. from the particular Circumstances attending the Gaol of
Newgate the Sheriff of Middx may lodge his prisoners in the
New Prison and Bridewell at Clerkenwell I conceive it to be
the duty of the Sheriff to keep these prisoners secure; particularly
as I am informed that your Gaoler the Keeper of Newgate has
continual Access to his prisoners in the sd. two prisons and disposes
of them according to the Orders he receives from you, taking fees
for the same.

I apprehend the Sheriffs will have no doubt of their
duty in this matter if they will please to refer to the Stat. of
7 Geo: 3. c.37. Sect. 6. whereby the Sheriff is directed to
convey and keep and detain in any prison in London or
Middx any prisoners who are or by law ought to be committed
to the County Gaol.and by the last Sect. of the Stat. of
20 Geo: 3. c. bh "The Sheriffs are to confine any Psons arrested
"or taken in Execution in any Gaol within the Co: of Midx
"and such Gaol is to be subject to all such Regulation as County
Gaols" consequently in that respect under the Care of the
Sheriffs of the County so far as relates to there prisoners

I am Sir
