St. Mary le Strand
At a Vestry held in the Church on Tuesday the 25th Day of
July 1780. to take into Consideration a Letter from the Committee
appointed by the Lord Lieutenant, Deputy Lieutenants and
Justices of the Peace
, of the County of Middlesex
and City and
Liberty of Westminster
, to consider of the most Effectual Means to
provide for the better Defence and Security of the said County City
and Liberty, addressed to the Vestry Clerk
of this Parish
Which Letter having been read and considered the Vestry can
to the following Resolutions, vizt.
Resolved That it appears to this Vestry, that, by the timely Exertion of
the Civil Magistrates, and the Assistance of the House keepers and principal
Inhabitants of the City. Peace and good order may at all Times be preserved therein.
Resolved. That learning the use of Arms will give an additional
Streng the to the House keepers and Respectable Inhabitants.
Resolved. That this Vestry earnestly recommend to the House keepers and
respectable Inhabitants of this Parish to accept the obliging offer contained in
the Letter from the said Committee.
Resolved That this Vestry earnestly recommend to each House keeper in
this Parish to provide himself with a Musquet and Bayonet
so that he
may at all Times be ready to assist in preserving Peace and good order in
this Parish and Neighbourhood.
Resolved That the Churchwardens and such five other Gentlemen of this
Parish as they shall thing proper to call to their assistance be a Committee to
wait on the several Inhabitants not present at this Meeting, to acquaint them
with the above Resolution, and to desire their Concurrence and Assistance therein
and to collect the Names of such as chuse to learn the use of Arms.
Resolved That the above Resolution be printed and sent to the several
Inhabitants
