At a Meeting of the joint Vestry of the Parishes
of St. Giles in the Fields & St. George Bloomsbury in the
County of Middlesex , held in the Vestry Room of the
said Parish of St. Giles in the Fields , on the 15th. day
of July 1780.

Esqrs. Secretaries to the Committee appointed by the Lord Lieu-
-tenant, Deputy Lieutenants & Justices of the Peace of the
County of Middlesex & City & Liberty of Westminster , to
consider of the most effectual Means to provide for the better defence
& Security of the said County, City & Liberty, was read, stating
that at a Meeting of the said Committee, held at the Guildhall
Westminster on the 4th day of July instant, his Grace the
Duke of Northumberland, having suggested that for the Preser-
vation of Peace & good Order, it had become necessary of put
the Civil Power upon a more effectual Establishment, the Com
mittee were unanimously of Opinion, that until a proper Plan
for that Purpose be formed & carried into Execution, an Offer
should be made to the several Parishes within the City and
Liberty of Westminster & to those of the County of Middlesex
which are contiguous thereto, that the Officers belonging to the
Royal Volunteer Companies should, during the Space of two
Months, give their Attendance, with their non-commissioned
Officers at proper Times, in the said Parishes, in Order to
instruct such Housekeepers & other respectable Inhabitants
who have engaged or may be willing to learn the Use of Arms,
for the purpose of assisting the Civil Magistrates in the
