15th July 1780.

AT a Meeting of the Vestry of these Parishes, held this Day, a Letter
from Henry Collingwood Selby,< no role > and Charles Eyles< no role > , Esquires , Secre-
taries to the Committee appointed by the Lord Lieutenant, Deputy
Lieutenants, and Justices of the Peace, of the County of Middlesex
and City and Liberty of Westminster , to consider of the most effectual
Means to provide for the better Defence and Security of the said
County, City, and Liberty, was read, stating, that, at a Meeting of the
said Committee, held at the Guildhall , Westminster , on the 4th Day of July
Instant, His Grace the Duke of Northumberland having suggested, that, for
the Preservation of Peace and good Order, it had become necessary to put
the Civil Power upon a more effectual Establishmentthe Committee were
unanimously of Opinion, that until a proper Plan for that Purpose be
formed. and carried into Execution, an Offer should be made to the several
Parishes within the City and Liberty of Westminster , and to those of the
County of Middlesex which are contiguous thereto, that the Officers be-
longing to the Royal Volunteer Companies should, during the Space of
Two Months, give their Attendance, with their Non-commissioned Officers,
at proper Times, in the said Parishes, in order to instruct such House-
keepers, and other respectable Inhabitants, who have engaged or may be
willing to learn the Use of Arms, for the Purpose of assisting the Civil
Magistrates in the Preservation of the Peace, when Occasion may require;
and also to furnish them with the Arms of the said Companies during the
Time of Exercise, and to defray any Expences that may accrue from the
Attendance of such Non-commissioned Officers on the Duty;

The Vestry took the said Letter into Consideration; and thereupon

RESOLVED,

THAT Notice be given to the Housekeepers, and other respec-
table Inhabitants of these Parishes, who are inclined to learn the Use of
Arms for the Purpose before mentioned, to send an Account of their
Names, Places of Abode, and Prosessions, to the Vestry Room of
St. Giles in the Fields , on Thursday the 20th, Friday the 21st, or Monday
the 24th Days of July Instant, between the Hours of Eleven and One, in
order that proper Persons may be recommended to the Officers of the
Royal Volunteer Compaines, to be instructed as aforesaid.
