State of Jacks for Special Case

2nd. May 1774}


Esther Orchard< no role > Wife of Thomas Orchard< no role > (who was gone from her) and their three
Children were removed from the Parish of St Giles in the Fields Middx to the Parish
of St: Anne Westmr. as the Place of their Settlement

It appeared in Evidence on hearing the Appeal against the said Order

That the said Esther Orchard< no role > was Married to the said Thomas about eight years
previous to the said removal and pad by him the said Children That the Father of
the said Thomas Orchard< no role > was legally Settled in the Parish of Saint Anne Westminster
and that he the said Thomas had not done any Act to gain a Settlement in his owen right
except that about twelve Months previous to their said Marriage he took a Shop at
Fifteen Guineas per Annum in Pickadilly in the Parish of Saint Jones Westminster
being part of the House of one Mrs. Ladler which Shop at the Anne of taking is had no
Door but that which opened immediately into the Street nor any communication
with the other part of the House but the said Thomas Orchard< no role > agreed for the use
of the Water and necessary (which were within the House) to which he had Access
in common with the other Ledgers by another Door be hearing to the House which opened into a Court
leading form Pickadilly to Jermyn Street And Also agreed at the Anne of
taking the Shopr . that his Sister (who was part of his Family) should lodge with
Mrs. Ladler Maid in the Garrott of the said House for which he was to pay an
additional Rent over and above the fifteen Guineas That in less than
a Month after he had taken possession of the Shop finding it inconvenient to go
out at one Door and in at another he applied to Mrs Ladler for leave to open
a way through the partition which seperated the Shop from the Stair Case
and she consented thereto and he opened the same accordingly That he
rented and rarded in the said Shop having such last mentioned communication
(to the Water the Necessary and the Stair Case by which his Sister went to her
Lodging in the Garrett) untill the time of his said Marriage, where he constantly
lodged and publickly carried on his Trade of a Shoemaker and remained in the
said House about two years afterward And That the said Mr. Ladler
rented and resided in the said House during all the me of the said Thomas residence as two for and for which she paid Thirty pounds for
Annum and all paroctical Taxes.
