At the GeneralSession of the Peace of our Lord the King
holden for the County of Middlesex at Hicks Hall in Saint John Street in
the said County (by Adjournment) On Thursday the Fourth day of September
in the Sixthyear of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third
King of Great Britain Etc Before John Hawkins< no role > Benjamin Cowley< no role > , Thomas
Niccoll
< no role > , Bartholomew Hammond< no role > Esquires and others their Fellows
Justices of our said Lord the King Assigned to keep the Peace in the County
aforesaid and also to hear and determine divers Felonies Trespasses and
other misdemeanours committed in the same County

Whereas the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Saint James
Clerkenwell in the said County Have at this Present Session Exhibited their Petition
and Appeal Setting forth That by Virtue of a Pass Warrant or Order under the
hands and Seals of James Esdaile< no role > and Benjamin Cowley< no role > Esquires two of his
Majestys Justices of the Peace for the said County of Middlesex (one whereof being
of the Quorum) bearing date the Ninth day of July 1766 Mary Smith< no role > wife of
Henry Smith< no role > and their Child Samuel< no role > aged three years or thereabouts were removed
and Conveyed from the Parish of Saint Luke in the said County to the said Parish
of Saint James Clerkenwell as the place of the last legal Settlement of the said
Mary Smith< no role > and her said Child Whereby the Petitioners thought themselves
Aggrieved Now upon hearing of the said Appeal and what hath been Alledged on
either side by the respective Churchwardens and Overseers their Council and Witnesses
in and concerning the Premisses It is Ordered that as to the Poor woman the said
Warrant or Order of the said two Justices be and the same is hereby confirmed
accordingly And that the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Saint
James Clerkenwell do maintain and provide for her until they can Free themselves from the
charge thereof by due Course of law And it now Appearing to the Court upon inspection of
the said Order of removal that the same as touching the Adjudication of the Settlement of the
said Poor child is defective in form in as much as it is not therein Stated that the said Child
was removed its said Mother for Nurture only but that the last legal Settlement of the said
Child was in the Parish of Saint James Clerkenwell Whereas it Appears that it not
legally Settled in the said Parish of Saint James Clerkenwell It is therefore Ordered
by and with the Consent of the Parties and their Council that the said Order be and the
same is hereby amended in that respect And such Amendment being made It is further
Ordered that the same as to the said poor Child be and the same is hereby confirmed
and that the said poor Child shall remain and be kept with its said Mother at the
Charge of the said Inhabitants of the said Parish for Nurture as long as it shall be
necessary and until they can Free themselves from the charge thereof by due course of
law
