And this Depont. further Saith that soon after the Death of Nathaniel
Duckenfield
< no role > Esquire one of the Justices of the Peace for the sd. County of
Middlesex acting in the Tower Division (who dyed in & about the
Month of May One Thousand Seven Hundred & Forty nine)
13 Application was made to this Depont. to Employ One Winstone a Victualler
who had been Clerk to several other) Justices of the Peace for the County
of Middx acting in the sd. Tower Division all since dead & also to the
said Mr. Duckenfield to Act as this Depont. Clerk & the sd. Winstone having
acted in the same Capacity for several Years to the amount of twenty
Years & upwards this Depont. did for sometime Employ the said
Winstone in that Capacity And this Depon. denys that at the time he
so Employed the sd. Winstone he knew or had heard that said
14 Winstone had been a Bayliff of White Chapple Court or what other
Station he might be in the Early part of his Life But this Depont. Saith
that upon Inquiry since he hath been informed which Information this
Depont. believes to be true that the sd. Winstone was twenty seven Years
ago & not since an Officer of the sd. Court And this Depont. Saith that she said
Winstone was a Person of Seventy Years of Age & of good Character as this
Depont hath heard & believes And this Depont. Saith that he doth not
remember that any Person or Persons who came to this Depont. from the
15 said Winstones House were Intoxicated or Fudled But this Deponent
Saith that he hath made it a Constant Rule in the Execution of his
Office never to Exhibit an Oath any Person or Persons intoxicated
with Liquor or fuddled And that he never has to his Knowledge or
Belief Exhibitted an Oath to any Person or Persons intoxicated or
fuddled but hath several times refused to take the Examinations of
Persons in those Circumstances And this Dept. further Saith he never
sent any Person or Persons to the said Winstone to take their
16 Informations or Examinations And that he never granted any Warrant
or Warrants without Examining the Partys himself & sometimes
he hath upon Examination of the Partys refused to grant any Warrant
And this Depont. further Saith that by Lease of first February One
Thousand Seven Hundred & Thirty Eight He Demised to the said
William Hallam< no role > the House comonly called the Bowling Green House
or Taphouse to the Stable Yard where many Gentlemen keep their
