& this Deponent did so believe the same to be And thereupon & ben [..]
apprehensive that the Refusal of the sd. License to the said Lewis
Hallam
< no role > was occasioned by the Dispute between the said Richard
Ricards
< no role > & the said William Hallam< no role > & the sd. Mr. Ricard (when in the
Chair) having as this Deponent understood by his maimer of Answering
this Deponent consented that this Deponent might so do He this
Deponent did soon afterwards Sign a Permissive Licence to the sd. Lewis
Hallam to Sell Ale & Beer And this Depont. denys that he knowsor belief
that the sd. House kept by the sd. Lewis Hallam is a Comon reputed or
known Bawdy House or that the said Lewis Hallam would suffer
Idle & disorderly Persons of both Sexes to resort there Day & Night &
Comit Outrages & Disorders to the Disturbance of the Inhabitants
And this Depont. denys he was urgent on the behalf of the said Lewis
Hallam or Endeavoured to get some or one of the Justices to join with
him in granting a Licence to the sd. Lewis Hallam or Intermedled
therein save as aforesaid And this Depont. further Saith that the said
Richard Ricards was afterwards so well satisfyed with the Character of
the said Lewis Hallam & of his sd. House that he joined with this Depo [..]
in granting the sd. Lewis Hallam a Licence to Sell Beer & Ale therein
under which Licence the sd. Lewis Hallam now keeps the sd House
which Licence is Dated Nineteenth of September One Thousand Seven
Hundred & Fifty And this Deponent further Saith that it has been
Usual & Customary for any one of the Justices of the Peace for that
Division in the Intervals between the Sessions for granting Licences
to Sign a Permission under their Hands to such Person as they should
think fit to Sell Beer & Ale which Permissions are Comonly called
Permissive Licences And if such Permissions or Permissive Licences are
illegal or improper (which this Deponent humbly Submits to your
Lordships Judgment) this Depont. Saith he was induced so to do by many
Instances which had seen of such Permissions having been granted
by other Justices of the Peace within the same Division And this
Depont. did not at the time of Granting the same know or apprehend the
same was illegal or improper And this Depont. further Says that the said
Richard Ricards hath himself Granted more of these Permissive Licences
than ever he this Depont. hath one as he hath heard & verily believes
