The Answer of Sir Samuel Gower< no role >
Knight one of His Majesties Justices of the
Peace for the County of Middlesex to the
Representation of his Majesties Justices of
the Peace of the County aforesaid in General
Sessions Assembled made to the Right
Honourable the Lord High Chancr of Great Britain

The said Sr. Samuel Gower< no role > This name instance is in set 3163. Maketh Oath & Saith that be Next three
& four Years ago Application was made to this Deponent (who then was
& still is one of his Majesties Justices of the Peace for the County of
Middlesex acting in the Tower Division ) be Mr. Barron an Eminent
Merchant then & now living in Goodmans Fields in the said County
to grant a Permissive Licence to Mrs. Roberts a Tenant of the said
Mr. Barron to Sell Beer & Ale whereby she might be Enabled to Obtain
a Licence from the Comissioners of his Majesties Revenue of Excise
to Retail Spirituous Liquors in a House situate in Ayloffe Street in
Goodmans Fields aforesaid will in the sd. Division Which House the
sd. Mr. Barron assured this Deponent the sd. Mr. Roberts would keep
only for the Space of three Months in order to have an Opportunity of
getting in her Debts And this Depont. knowing the said Mr. Barron to be
a Gentleman of Character & Fortune & relying on his Honour &
Integrity in Regard to the Person recomended (whom this Deponent
to his Knowledge never saw) He this Depont. did at this Instance sign
a Permissive Licence to the said Mrs. Roberts to Sell Beer & Ale But
this Deponent Saith that the sd. Mrs. Roberts did not by such License
keep the sd. House long open but dyed the fifth day of December
following which was in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven
Hundred & Forty Seven And this Depont. denys that he was present
at any General Meeting of the Justices of the sd. Division when they
refused to grant a Licence to the sd. Mrs. Roberts or that this Depont. was
surgent on her behalf or endeavoured to get some or one of the said
Justices to join with him in granting such License And this Depont.
is Credibly Informed & Believed that she never applyed to the Justices
for a License And this Depont. further Saith that Lewis Hallam in
the sd Representation named did in or about the Year One Thousand
Seven Hundred & Forty Eight after the Usual time for granting
Licences for that Year was past take an Alehouse in Goodmans Fields
