November 1796.

the Produce of the Prisoners Labour without any Demand
as the Treasurer and which Sum it is apprehended will
very shortly be saved in the reduced Expenditure of Coals -
It having been demonstrated that Broth for 200. Prisoners
may be drest for less than three pence in the Article of Coals.

At this Meeting Mr.. Rogers laid before the Committee
a Plan of the proposed Alterations at the New Prison
for the more effectual separation of the different Classes of
Offenders and for the Provision of Rooms to be filled up
for the Reception of Prisoners able and willing to pay
for them and Mr. Rogers was desired to come prepared
to submit a Plan and Estimate to the Court this Day.

The Governors Report of the produce of the Prisoners
Labour in Three Months from 15th. July to 15th. October
was £74..12s..10d. out of which a Deduction being made
of £12..13s..10½d for the Prisoners share and Allowance
there remained a Nett balance in favour of the County of
£61..18s..11½d from the Labour of the last Three Months
Now tho it is no unpleasant Circumstance that the County
Receives between 2 and £300. Per Annum from the Laber
of the Prisoners yet this is the least part of the Benefit
desired from their Labour their Employment keeps them
from Mischief lessens the Misery of their Confinement
introduces an Habit of Industry and returns the Prisoner
to Society better disposed to be an useful Member of it
than when he was withdrawn from it having never known
perhaps till he came within the Walls of this well governed
Prison what it was to eat the Bread of Industry.

And the following Certificate of Mr.. Webb the
Surgeon and Apothecary to the Prisoners being also Read.

of the peace.

I do hereby Certify I am of Opinion that the
Prisoners in the House of Correction who have been in
