September 1796.

Aaron Graham< no role > Esquire one of His Majestys
Justices of the peace for this County informed the Court
that he had been sent to by Mr Aris the Governor of
the House of Correction upon the first Alarm of a riotous
disposition in the Prisoners desiring his Attendance
and advice before any Coercive Measures were used to
reduce the Prisoners to a sense of their Duty that in
consequence he did attend at the said Prison forthwith
where he found the Prisoners in a Mutinous and
disorderly state in the Chapel that he inquired
whether they had any just cause of Complaint and
desired any person who thought himself aggrieved
to stand forth and state the cause of his Complaint
but no person stated any Injury or hardship which
they had personally suffered but that Collectively they
had not all the Indulgencies afforded they by the
Magistrates that one or two of them stated that
there was a deficiency in the Weight of Bread delivered
which Complaint being examined into appeared to
be totally unfounded That he thereupon required
them forthwith to depart to their respective Stations
in an Orderly and quiet manner and that in
consequence thereof the Prisoners returned excepting
27. who refuses [..] comply with his request and that
the Governor was therefore obligat to use force to
compel them - Resolved that the thanks of this
Court be given to Aaron Graham< no role > Esquire for his
attendance at the Prison and his judicious and
proper Conduct upon this Occasion - Mr. Aris the
Governor was then examined respecting the matter
