January 1793.

Your Committee therefore Ordered the following steps and precautions to be
pursued Vizt.

That all the Beds in the Sick Ward of Clerkenwell Bridewell should be
repaired and New Stuffing be supplied taking care to have the Ticking well
aired.

That every Bed should be supplied with a New Rug where wanted
and if any additional Covering may be necessary for the Sick that the same be
supplied upon a Certificate from the Apothecary .

It appeared to Your Committee that many of the Disorders are
occasioned by the Prisoners coming in, in a weak and duplicated state of health
covered with Rags and Vermin and that if some Dress or Uniform was provided
for them to wear in the Prison it might be the means of preventing many of
the Disorders incident to Prisons; It was therefore the opinion of this Commee
That a Dress consisting of a Jacket and Trousers and a pair of Shoes and
Two shirts where it may be necessary be provided for the Men and that a
Jacket and Petticoat and Shoes and two Shifts for the Women be also provided.

That it be requested of Mr Staples to provide the above Necessaries upon
a Certificate from the Apothecary .

And Your Committee further Resolved, That the Cloaths in which
the Prisoners come in should be Baked, numbered, and laid by where necessary
and the Governor to take care when the Prisoners first come in that they be
Washed and cleansed and properly cleared from Fifth and Vermin, and if the
present Bath will not answer that a temporary Bath or Bathing Tub be
provided and that the Oil of Jar be used in such way as the Apothecary shall
direct.

That the same Resolutions extend to the New Prison so far as
the same are necessary.

All which the Committee Submit Etc

Ordered that the said Report be Received and Confirmed and that
the several Articles in the said Report directed and recommended for the use
of the Prisoners be forthwith provided and that the said Committee do meet on
Saturday next and see the same carried into execution.

Mr Harwood the Governor of the House of Correction having informed the
Court that he had in consequence of what passed on Thursday provided some
Cloaths for the Prisoners in his Custody and which was immediately necessary.

Ordered that Mr Harwood and Mr. Newport do supply what may be
immediately necessary for the use of the Sick Prisoners in their custody respectively.

Ordered that Mr Wood do forthwith erect a chimney in the Sick Ward of Clerkenwell
Bridewell for the use of the Prisoners & that Coal be burnt therein instead of Charcoal.
